Kawandi is a scrap technique created by the Siddis, African people who were enslaved and brought to India by the Portuguese. They invented this colorful patchwork from scraps sewn to a backing fabric. This fascinating process starts with the outside edges and works in towards the center, with simple running stitches holding it all together. It’s easy, fun, relaxing and totally addictive.

required supplies:
- Fabric backing (lightweight cotton) anything up to 18 x 22” (we’re just making a small one for starters, you can use it as a wall quilt or a placemat.)
- Thin batting or flannel - cut slightly smaller than the backing
- Cotton scraps, mostly small squares, rectangles or strips
- Scissors
- Regular sewing thread
- Thread : perle cotton size 8 or 12, Aurifil 12, or Sashiko thread
- Embroidery needles
- Thimble
- Pins
