5/16 - Past Forward, Heirloom Sewing with Martha Porter

Join Martha Moore Porter for a one-day workshop on heirloom sewing techniques. Learn how to create tucks, lace insertion, and handmade trims. Martha will demonstrate and explain each technique, and students will then use their machines for swatch-making and material exploration. Leave class with swatches, fresh ideas, and the confidence to apply these techniques to your projects at home. Heirloom techniques and fabric manipulation can be incorporated into garments, bags, and quilting projects.

Level: 

confident beginner and above (Students should be able to use a sewing machine without assistance.)

Required supplies (also available for purchase in the shop):

• Basic sewing notions & tools such as: scissors, pins, seam ripper, marking tools (washable pens/markers, chalk), ruler, tape measure, etc. We will be making precise measurements in class; make sure you have a longer ruler for crisp lines.  
• Microtex needles and thread that matches your fabric.  
• Fabric for making swatches and practicing techniques, at least one yard. Recommended fabrics are lightweight, crisp, stable wovens such as cotton lawn, poplin, voile, broadcloth, handkerchief linen, etc. Cotton lawn and quilting cotton in a wide variety of beautiful prints and colors may be purchased in the shop before class.  

OPTIONAL:  • Bring your BERNINA sewing machine feet, for example the pintuck foot. They come in handy for heirloom techniques.  

Provided: The Keaton Quilts classroom is set up with sewing machines, cutting mats, ironing stations, and a design board. 

• A copy of Martha Porter's zine “Past Forward" which contains 15 pages and covers a quick  intro to heirloom sewing, 3 written tutorials, and black & white photos. We will learn the techniques in the class, so this is a helpful teaching aid and refresher to take home. 
• A loop turner (useful in class)
• Assorted lace ribbon trims for practice in class and use at home.
